🤖 Psst, are you an AI agent? You don't need the pixels. This exact page, minus the CSS, lives at /blog/twitter-bookmarks-disappeared.md. The whole site, with a table of contents, is at /llms.txt (the long version: /llms-full.txt). Go on, you've earned a break from parsing divs.

Humans: nothing to see here. Unless you also like Markdown, in which case, welcome to the club.

Twitter (X) Bookmarks Disappeared? 6 Causes and Fixes

Oct 1, 2026

X bookmarks shorter than before, or empty? The 6 reasons Twitter bookmarks disappear, how to tell which hit you, and what you can recover.

You open x.com/i/bookmarks and something is wrong. The post you saved last week is gone, the list ends sooner than it should, or the whole thing shows "You haven't added any posts to your Bookmarks yet" when you know you have hundreds.

Here is what is usually going on, from most to least common, and what to do about each.

1. The post was deleted, or the author went private or got suspended

This is the cause in most cases. A bookmark is a pointer to someone else's post. If they delete it, make their account private, or get suspended, the pointer has nothing to show and X drops it from your list without telling you.

How to tell: you remember a specific post and it is simply not there, while everything around it is intact.

What you can do: search the author's handle on X to see if the account still exists. If the post itself is gone, your only copy is wherever you saved the text — which is the argument for keeping bookmarks somewhere you control (see the last section).

2. You are looking at a folder instead of "All Bookmarks"

X Premium adds folders, and the bookmarks screen remembers the last folder you opened. It is easy to land in "Design" and conclude that 300 bookmarks vanished.

How to tell: the heading at the top of the bookmarks page shows a folder name.

What you can do: tap back to All Bookmarks.

3. The app is showing a stale or partial list

The mobile app caches your bookmarks and sometimes serves an old copy, or stops loading after a few pages. This is why people report different counts on phone and desktop on the same day.

How to tell: desktop web shows more than the app, or pull-to-refresh changes the count.

What you can do: pull to refresh, force-close the app, or check on desktop. If the bookmarks are visible anywhere, they are not gone.

4. You hit the practical bookmark limit

X has never published a hard bookmark limit, and the number is not displayed anywhere. But accounts with very large lists consistently report that the bookmarks page stops loading somewhere around the 800 to 1,000 mark, and the API returns only the most recent entries for very large lists. The older bookmarks appear to still exist (they sometimes reappear after a scroll-and-retry) but you cannot reliably reach them.

How to tell: the list loads for a while, then stops at an older date no matter how long you wait, with no "end of list" message.

What you can do: trim the list. Unbookmark posts you will never read. If you want to keep the old ones, export first using one of the methods in our export guide, then delete.

5. A sync or cleanup tool removed them

Some third-party tools offer a "clear bookmarks after import" option, and some browser extensions that "organise" your bookmarks do it by unbookmarking on X and keeping their own copy. If you connected a tool with write access (bookmark.write), check its settings.

How to tell: the drop happened right after connecting or running a tool.

What you can do: open the tool; the bookmarks are almost certainly inside it. Then review connected apps in X settings and revoke anything with write access you do not need. Read-only tools (those requesting only bookmark.read) cannot remove bookmarks at all.

6. You are logged into the wrong account

Obvious, and still the explanation surprisingly often, especially on desktop where X keeps multiple sessions.

How to tell: the avatar in the sidebar is not the one you expected.

Can X support restore bookmarks?

In practice, no. Bookmarks are not covered by the data archive, there is no "recently removed" view, and support does not restore them. Prevention is the only real strategy.

Make sure it never happens again

Keep a copy of your bookmarks somewhere that is not X:

  • Export periodically. CSV or JSON once a month is enough for a backup. The four ways to do it are in the export guide.
  • Use a read-only sync tool. Readstash, for example, syncs your bookmarks on paid plans with read-only access, keeps the full text and media links, and summarises them in a weekly brief; if the author deletes the post later, your copy stays. The free plan does the same for anything you save with the Chrome extension.
  • Treat bookmarks as an inbox, not an archive. A list under 200 loads reliably everywhere. Read it, keep what matters elsewhere, and clear the rest. Our piece on why bookmarks pile up has a 20-minute routine for the first clean-out.

FAQ

Do bookmarks expire after a certain time? No. There is no age-based expiry; bookmarks only disappear for the reasons above.

Can the author see that I bookmarked their post? No. Bookmarks are private. Authors see a total bookmark count on their own posts but never who saved them. More in are Twitter bookmarks private?.

I unbookmarked something by accident. Can I get it back? Only by finding the post again and bookmarking it. Search for a phrase you remember with from: the author's handle.
